The Art Hole

ROM Spaceknight

So every December, Floating World Comics here in Portland has an art show to help raise money for Bill Mantlo. Who is Bill Mantlo you ask? Google him. No, really, go ahead and do it. I will wait right here.....
Okay, now you know about ROM and the Dire Wraiths and the art show coming up this fall and everything, right?
Well, here's my entry for this year's show. ROM sporting some Mantlo loving....granted, it's a low-res web version of a much larger image, but you get the idea.

Jesse's Super Heroics

In December of 2009, December 12th to be exact (MY BIRTHDAY!!!), I participated in X-Men for Xmas Day at Excalibur Comics here in lovely Portland Oregon, along with Matt Fraction, Terry Dodson, and Dustin Weaver (among others).I know, I know, I'm LATE posting this, but, ah well...at least it's here now.
The aforementioned writers and artists all work on the current X-Men books, and all were on hand to sign and discuss all things X-Men. What better way for a comic nerd to spend his birthday!
I was there auctioning off Tattoo gift certificates to help raise money for P:ear Gallery. Jesse (pictured below) was one of the winners and this is the tattoo we came up with.....

Sage Spotlight on Doug (Part 2)

So here we are with Doug's current project: his Right arm he wants sleeved with bony bio-armor. I love working with Doug, he gives me key words and ideas and lets me run with my own intuition and ideas. Like the "Dream-Time" sleeve on his Left arm, he wanted attention payed to negative space. He sent me some cool reference of rhino skin and armadillo armor, and off I went.
The first photo in the gallery is the concept drawing:
a full-colored side view and a sketch of what the lines will look like when viewed from behind.
The rest of the photos in the album are from 3 separate stages of the work in progress:
* The "bloodline" phase--in this case quick lines done over my ink drawing in a light orange that will heal visible but will be easily shaded over.
* Middle tone browns and grays.
* And our latest sessions with highlights and deeper tones starting to fill in the scaled areas.
The very last photo in the album (the top of the forearm) is a pretty good idea of how the whole piece will look once we finish shading in all the bony areas and the shoulder cap. Doug 's skin takes white and light colors well, so I am fairly confident all those highlight will stay in the ridges.
The last thing I will ink will be to soften and balance ALL the shading around all the inside and outside edges and then add in all the spots and mottling.

The Stag King's Heart

I got to hang out and spend some good inking time and heart space with my friend Jaime today.
Jaime's heart is so big, he wanted the world to see it, so we started in on the beginning of a larger piece. What you are seeing is his back, right at the base of his neck, off center, to the left a bit. The heart is nestled between the ends of a set of stag horns that curl around to make a collar piece (tattooed by Portland Artist Mickey Warner.)
We let the ends of the arteries trail off and be a little flatter so they will blend in better when we add the water background later on down the road. I just loved doing this piece so much I wanted to share it even though we aren't finished yet.
Thanks Jaime!!

Sage Spotlight on: Doug Shick (part 1)

This will be the first in a continuing series of posts focusing on individual clients of mine and the projects we are working on together.
So here's Doug (part 1). Part 2 will be coming soon focusing on Doug's current project (a step by step through the ongoing efforts to turn Doug's right arm into overlapping chitinous bio-armor).
Doug is also here on posterous.
You can find him by looking through my subscribers for syzygy.
So here are the projects we have completed over the last 4 or 5 years: chest, back, and left arm. When Doug first found me he only had a little star on his chest and wanted the pheonix growing up and around it. Then, after a big trip to Australia, we started the design process for his left arm, titled "Dream-Time." The massive dragonfly on his back pretty much speaks for itself.
Enjoy!!!
